Darjeeling’s second flush arrives in late May, and its signature character comes from an unlikely source: the jassid, a leafhopper that feeds on the young leaf. In defending itself the plant produces terpenes, and those terpenes taste like muscat grape.
Which means the tea can only exist on estates that do not spray. Rungneet sits at 1,700 m on the Darjeeling ridge and has been unsprayed for two decades. We take one chest a year.
